We think of hydration as just adding water to our diet, enough for our body weight… but we also need minerals to hold the hydration of the cells. Our cells need a healthy balance of water and salts to produce energy and remove toxins. If we do not have enough, we may experience headaches, nausea, muscle cramps, weakness, fatigue and become dehydrated.
For balance, our cells need to recover their salt-water equilibrium. Every single cell in our body contains salt. Salt is the generic term for "ions" charged particles. It does this by helping to maintain the balance of fluids in and around our cells, preventing water loss. It also helps to maintain the osmotic pressure, which is important for the movement of water in and out of cells. Osmosis is controlled by the salt concentrations. Water constantly moves from cells with a lower concentration of salt to cells with a higher concentration of salt. Salt follows water. So, for a cell to pull water inside it needs salt.
Salts in our cells help regulate their size by bringing water in regulating their electrical activity. Information cannot carry through the body without having the electrical current. Nerve cells fire off an impulse, a sudden flood of sodium into one patch of a nerve cell. An electrical signal goes down the nerve and regenerates a rapid transmission of information to the systems of the body. Without the salts the electrical current is weak and so are we.
